After School Club for Acton Primary Academy
It all started when a pupil at the school remarked about the beauty of the Church building and what fun it would be to use the space and opportunities in the Parish for creative learning, fun and friendship rather than just come over to the Church for occasional services.
We decided to make the building and all the treasures within it available to the After School Club, led by Stephanie Palin for those children whose parents work longer than the school day, keeping the children safe and entertained until 5.00pm.
A small team of led by Joyce Percival, welcome the children one Wednesday afternoon each month for an hour of fun and friendship, creating a firm bond and working partnership between the Church and the School. The Children appreciate the change of scenery, the friendly welcome and feel a real sense of belonging in the midst of the community. The Church lends itself not only to demonstrating the Christian festivals, but also has a wealth of history in its building, music and singing at its heart, and an appreciation of the arts to share, whilst having fun and letting off steam at the end of a school day!
We have built an Easter Garden, around a stone tomb, with each child making a small posy of spring flowers to place along the pathway.
At another session the Church Organist demonstrated the workings of our wonderful organ and the children all had a practice on the keyboards.
ALSO our Church cleaning ladies delighted in showing them the beautiful woodwork and carvings in the building, before they all had a go polishing with cloths and the wax polish.
There are some confident theatrical children and their talents were demonstrated when we play acted some of the Miracles of Jesus.
